Shagbark hickory bud
Every year I see these in the woods and think "Ooh, what is that interesting looking flower?" And then I immediately realize it's a baby shagbark hickory.

    I love when shagbark buds open! These photos are wonderful — I’m so glad you were able to get them in the little window of time when the hickories look like this. You’ve inspired me to go out and look at our young one today!

    I’ve never seen such a nice close-up of that trunk in all its dandruff! and there’s that fresh green branch to the left – very good.
